Sex Education

Let's talk about sex! Our motion to the 2016 Welsh Liberal Democrat Spring Conference caused a little bit of controversy before the conference had even started, getting the Welsh Liberal Democrat website blocked on the Senedd wifi!

This joint motion proposed a range of measures focusing on improving relationship and sex education in Wales schools, ensuring that they covered crucial issues like consent and LGBT+ issues.

We called for the creation of a stronger and more inclusive sex and relationship education curriculum in Wales which properly deals with issues of gender identity, sexuality, consent and healthy relationships at the earliest appropriate age. We also argued that the parent’s or legal guardian’s right to exclude their child from any part of SRE in any school in Wales should be removed, to ensure that all pupils had the right to learn about healthy relationships.

Our motion also drew attention to the issues of accessing sexual health clinics in areas of rural Wales, the need to introduce PREP introduced in Wales, and ideas to improve the rate of STI testing.

In government, Kirsty Williams AM, the Welsh Liberal Democrat Minister for Education, as part of wider reforms to the curriculum (introducing the first-ever 'made in Wales' curriculum) has set out a newcompulsory, comprehensive and inclusive relationship and sex education.
